It’s been a crazy 2008 for DaFam. Here’s a summary of the things we did in 2008:

In May, Ayu turned legal, we started our first series “Popcorn Playa” at Singapore Art Museum and a total of 170 people turned up to support. 

In June, Feekee’D won the Favourite New Artistes at the 1st Hope Awards. We were also featured on Xclusive Online Radio, a now-defunct Singapore Hiphop podcast. We also tied up with the National Library Board, and we had Chillout@Vibes at Jurong Regional Library. They’ve got a new mini-series at Library@Esplanade every month starting January and we’re in charge of getting acts! 

In July, DaFam celebrated our 6th Anniversary, we had our second show “Whuzzat” at Playden, Arts House where we saw a standing crowd - the first in a very long time. We wrote an article about getting that lucrative record deal, and all the other clauses of your contract. We also wrote an article about the Musician’s Curse, which drew a lot of opinions.

In August, Flip contributed a song in a very well done short film. Chaz had to leave for Thailand, coming back just in time to host Popcorn Playa 2. It was also the first time Mr Chan became a co-host on the show. 

In November, we were invited to cover “Mingle with the Singles” - we’ll update you more on that shortly. We also found ourselves covering “KL Hiphop Fest“, which was a sore disappointment if you ask me. Our family also grew a little bigger after Mr Chan and Fairul went through the welcome party and rituals. 

In December, DaFam was invited to perform at Beats&Break, Esplanade put together by the people at 65Hope. It was also the day when Chaz became a free man after completing National Service. We had Popcorn Playa 3, where we had SSK from Malaysia to perform for us. 

Really, we haven’t done much this year. We’ll try again next year.

Popcorn Playa is back in a bigger venue, even bigger acts and even more not-so-funny jokes. Hosted by the deadly duo Mr. Chan and Chaz Ali, both just waiting to blow their load off. Oh, don’t expect anything to be perfect, because Popcorn Playa is just that!

Beats & Breaks starts tomorrow at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre (It’s FREE!) and we’re performing! The show starts at 7.30 but stay throughout and make sure you watch till the end!

The night started with a whole lot of energy, but it quickly died down as the ones who had performed left the venue after their slot. Nothing new there, eh?

The only Singaporean group to have made it on the main performance, Phatnatrix, received a very disappointing response as the entire crowd walked off during the performance. At least a handful stayed in the back, leaving the front of the pit empty for a good 10 minutes. The situation improved as they performed their new track, ACPM, during their last song.

Phlowtron blazed the stage with a high-energy performance featuring a small kid who was popping on the stage throughout the set while Alia moved the crowd with her well-sculpted tummy.  The groups performed a few songs featured in their latest album including the must-listen “Bicara Neguran” and “Suara Dunia”.

Samir was the highlight of the night, as he made a grand entrance with a gang of bikers (and we’re not talking of ‘mat rempits’) entering the arena in their big bikes. With their bikes roaring everytime he asks the crowd the “make some noise”, the crowd suddenly reappeared again in full force, everyone vying for the front row. Damian of V.E. made a short appearance on Samir’s set and set the crowd blazing with their “Party Like This” before ending it off on a high note with “Rollin’ by Limp Bizkit’” to send off the bikers.

Soul ID (two dudes and a really cute chick with powerful vocals) came on next with a highly choreographed performance, followed by 4Dub, with Hydro in a bullet-proof vest (okay, I don’t really care if it’s bullet proof).

Probably one of the best acts that night, Akil (Jurassic 5) moved the crowd over and over again - and even got them on stage to freestyle. Sadly though, none of the local audience actually went up - and the staged was filled with rappers from the earlier acts. He also showed the crowd that he could also breakdance as he whipped out a couple of moves on stage.

The night ended on a good note - the guests were invited for an afterparty at Modesto, which turned out to be the most boring part of the night. We left soon enough and headed to the fast food outlet just next door instead.
